Performance Options

While both of these options come with an impressive array of engines to choose from, the XC60 offers more choices that are more powerful. Being the smaller model, the XC40 comes with the smaller Volvo T4 and T5 engines. Both of these engines are turbocharged inline-four engines, the T4 makes 187 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, and the T5 gets 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The larger XC60 comes with the T5 and T6 engines. The T5 is similar to the XC40 T5, but brings 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and the T6 includes a supercharger with its turbocharger to increase the horsepower to 316 and torque to 295 pound-feet. The XC60 even includes a plug-in hybrid option that has a net horsepower of 400 and 472 pound-feet of torque.

All-Wheel Drive Availability

When you want your SUV to be able to maintain traction in some of the harshest conditions, you will want to make sure you have all-wheel drive. You won't have to worry about finding an XC60 that has all-wheel drive because all of them do: it is a standard feature. The XC40 is a different story though, it is only an available choice, with the other models having front-wheel drive.

Interior Features

As Volvo models, you can expect the interior of both these SUVs to be luxurious and comfortable, but the XC60 offers some features that XC40 leaves out. To be ready for any climate you are driving through, the XC60 has Four-Zone Climate Control available, the XC40 only has a Two-Zone Climate Control system.

As a larger model, it is clear that the XC60 will have slightly more cargo space than the XC40. The XC60 also offers more space in nearly every interior dimension for passenger space, but the XC40 has a lead when it comes to front and rear headroom.
