According to a recent report by CarBuzz, popularity for Volvo-brand SUVs has never been higher. Volvo’s impressive lineup of SUVs, including such rides as the XC40, XC60, and XC90, are proving to be a formidable force in the luxury SUV segment.

Now, according to a number of recent reports, Volvo has decided that its next SUV will be a fully electric model that’s even more compact than the XC40. While nothing has been confirmed as far as a name goes, the model will likely be known as the XC20, since a trademark for that nameplate was recently filed.

At this year's Beijing Auto Show, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson told CarBuzz that the upcoming all-electric SUV’s platform will be developed by Geely, a Chinese-owned company that has played a significant role in Volvo’s ascent to the peak of the luxury automotive mountain in recent years.

The new platform, dubbed “Sustainable Experience Architecture” (SAE), will serve as the upcoming compact SUVs basis rather than relying on the existing architecture of the XC40.

"We'll use it for a smaller car, where I think it's very practical and smart for us to share that, so we can have a cost structure for a smaller car that's very competitive,” Samuelsson said.

“It's difficult to push the CMA platform [the XC40's chassis], which is a combination platform for EVs and combustion-engined cars, further down. So if you want to do a smaller car than XC40 then SEA can do it. We will use it for that," he concluded.

While no concrete plan for the XC20’s official launch has been announced just yet, Volvo has announced its goal to convert half of its sales volume into fully-electric vehicles by 2025. With that information, experts are speculating that the all-new compact all-electric Volvo XC20 may launch within the next two years.
