As the wild year of 2020 wound to a close, Volvo Cars had the pleasure of reporting the strongest second-half sales numbers in the history of the company, with a six percent increase in December alone. In a year marred by a global pandemic and fallen sales for multiple automotive companies around the world, that’s impressive.

At the beginning of the year, Volvo acted decisively to mitigate the impact of COVID-19, allowing it to quickly restart operations after a brief shutdown. Aided by higher demand for its Recharge lineup in countries like the U.S. and China, this helped the Swedish automaker embark on a strong second-half recovery.

"We had a great second half of the year after a tough start, gaining market share in all our main sales regions," Volvo's head of Global Commercial Operations, Lex Kerssemakers, said in the statement. "We aim to build on this positive trend in 2021 as we continue to roll out new electrified Volvos and expand our online business," he added.

During the first half of 2020, Volvo sales actually dropped by 21 percent, which coincided with other automakers affected by the global quarantine period. By the second half of the year however (beginning in June) Volvo began reporting solid monthly growth. During that period, sales rose by 7.4 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

In China, sales rose by 7.5 percent compared to 2019. In the U.S., Volvo sold 110,129 cars, a 1.8 percent increase from the year before. In both markets, Volvo’s incredible SUV lineup was largely responsible.

In Europe, the strong demand for Volvo’s electric Recharge cars in many key markets also lead to an acceleration of online sales, which will continue to be a focus area in 2021. Last year, Volvo more than doubled its number of subscriptions sold online compared to 2019 as well.

As the decade rolls on, Volvo Cars is committed to becoming a premium electric car company. By 2025, the company is aiming for 50 percent of their sales to be made up of fully electric cars, with the rest being hybrids.

Currently, Volvo is the only car manufacturer to offer a plug-in hybrid variant on every model in its lineup.
