Automotive-branded fashion doesn’t have the best reputation in either the automotive industry or the fashion industry, but Volvo seems to have found the key to changing that– a sustainable alternative to leather and a chic, subtle design produced by 3.1 Phillip Lim.
Volvo has made a commitment to sustainability and finding eco-friendly alternatives to materials that are currently used by the automotive industry. 3.1 Phillip Lim, a revolutionary sustainable fashion brand, shares these convictions, and the two have partnered to create a weekend bag made from Volvo interior materials.
3.1 Phillip Lim is an independent fashion brand based in New York and is highly recognized in the move towards sustainable fashion, earning acclaim for the creation of a carbon-neutral dress adorned with bioplastic sequins made of algae. They combine effortless style and luxury sensibilities with a drive to source and utilize alternative materials to replace more harmful ones that are commonly used in their industry. With Volvo, they found a like-minded partner.
This designer weekend bag is made from Nordico, Volvo’s answer to the question of how to replace leather as the interior material of choice for luxury vehicles. Starting with the C40 Recharge, all of Volvo’s electric cars will be completely leather-free, instead using Nordico. This material is made from PET bottles, bio-attributed material from sustainable forests in Sweden and Finland, and corks recycled from the wine industry, to name a few, and is not only significantly more environmentally friendly and cruelty-free than traditional leather, but also directly reduces waste– only certain parts of traditional leather can be used, whereas Nordico can be used edge-to-edge like any other fabric.
This bag is designed to be both modern and classic, perfect for a weekend getaway or for everyday use, with a double strap and plenty of storage. It was based on a collection of 3.1 Phillip Lim bags called the 31 Hours series.
“Sustainability has been a part of the 3.1 brand from the beginning; working to achieve a sustainable balance in everything we do. Our brand mantra is to make less, mean more.” said Phillip Lim, Co-Founder and Creative Director of 3.1 Phillip Lim. “Connecting with Volvo on this sustainability project, was an instant alignment of values. I strongly feel that in our collective current state of mind, we have the freedom to find sustainable solutions with new materials, while still being able to achieve high design, which is the ultimate luxury.”
Unfortunately, this exclusive bag will not be available for purchase. However, a limited number will be available through events such as competitions, charity auctions, and giveaways, so it will still be possible for people to get their hands on one of these gorgeous pieces.
