Volvo recently debuted the technical innovation behind the Volvo EX90, which will be shown to the general public on November 9, 2022 in Stockholm. This vehicle utilized the Swedish elite car manufacturer’s design principles to ensure world-class quality. The SUV’s sleek style emphasizes the Volvo EX90’s new role as an elegant, efficient, all-electric family vehicle that achieves even higher safety results than any other Volvo before it.

With the company’s new flagship model, Volvo's engineers have yet again proven that exceptional functionality, practical design, and safety do not have to sacrifice beautiful design work. The connection of the standard lidar sensor, which is conveniently placed in the roof line of the Volvo EX90, overwhelmingly proves this.

The vehicle’s Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) technology uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to accurately measure distances with incredible precision. It’s so precise, it can deliver reliable detections of pedestrians of up to a distance of 250 meters. The technology is therefore one of the fundamentals in the way of unsupervised independent driving.

“We’ve put a lot of effort into the illumination inside the EX90, trying to create a warm interior and a somewhat colder expression for the exterior,” says T. Jon Mayer, Volvo’s head of exterior design. “It’s also connected to how people in Scandinavia might be perceived. There’s a calm and understated confidence that can read as cold at first – but once you get to know people, you find that they're really warm. That very same confidence is exactly what we’re trying to convey in the expression of our cars.”

A great electric car should give you a streamlined exterior because aerodynamic drag is the enemy of advanced efficiency. Thankfully, Volvo designed the EX90 with optimal driving range in mind, ensuring that the vehicle’s build cuts drag and wind resistance to a minimum.

The EX90’s attractive and rounded front, brought together with design choices like flush glazing and the smooth door handles, ensures that air flows unimpeded towards the rear of the vehicle. Details like these are important because they directly affect the so-called drag coefficient, which is used to design the SUV’s aerodynamic efficiency.
