We’re proud to announce that the Volvo XC90 midsize luxury SUV has just earned the highly coveted 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It’s a busy month for award-winning Volvos, as many more of the company’s luxury SUVs and wagons were recently named Car and Driver ‘Editors’ Choice Award’ winners for 2023. More specifically, The XC90 lineup’s new achievement is even more impressive given that the IIHS has toughened its criteria, demanding better side crash protection, improved pedestrian crash prevention systems, and the elimination of subpar headlights from qualifying vehicles.
Safety has always been at the heart of Volvo Cars' mission, and the company's commitment to keeping drivers and passengers safe is evident in every aspect of their vehicles. The XC90 has consistently proven to be one of the safest vehicles on the road, and this latest accolade is a testament to Volvo Cars' unwavering dedication to safety.
One of the most significant changes to the criteria is the replacement of the original IIHS side crash test with a new and improved test that involves 82 percent more energy. To qualify for the TSP, vehicles must now earn an acceptable or good rating, while a good rating is required for the TSP+.
Both the mild hybrid (XC90) and plug-in hybrid (XC90 Recharge) versions of the XC90 have earned the TSP+ award, which is a remarkable achievement. But that's not all – the XC90 Recharge also offers up to 35 miles of all-electric driving in Pure mode, making it not only safe but also environmentally friendly.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, Volvo Cars has announced plans to sell only fully electric vehicles by 2030 and aims to become carbon neutral by 2040. With its impressive safety features and eco-friendly design, the Volvo XC90 is a clear example of how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
