Volvo’s South Carolina-based car factory is due for an all-electric makeover. According to recent reports, Volvo Cars has officially confirmed that the plant will transition to building only electric vehicles at the facility.

According to CEO Hakan Samuelsson, this facility will be the first to build its next-generation electric cars, even before any European or Chinese plant. Initially, it will serve as an export hub for the new electric Volvo XC90, in addition to the upcoming Polestar 3 electric SUV.

Thus far, no concrete details about the Polestar 3 have been announced, but a teaser image has been released, giving us our first official look at the SUV's silhouette. Given its relationship to the Volvo XC90, expect the Polestar 3 to be roughly the same size.

For now, Polestar only says the 3 "will feature industry-leading connectivity features based on Google's native Android Automotive OS infotainment system, as well as high-end, safety-focused autonomous driving features," according to a statement.

So far, the strategy is to follow local manufacturing strategy in an effort to cut back on export and shipping costs. This is especially critical for EVs, as the heavier a vehicle is, the more expensive it is to transport around the world.

Volvo’s modern South Carolina facility has the capacity to produce up to 150,000 vehicles per year. With two new SUVs coming, it seems likely that the local workforce is in for some business.
