For years, the Volvo brand has been synonymous with safety. Now that the International Institute of Highway Safety’s official ratings are in for the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge, the brand has become the first to earn the highest possible safety rating across its entire lineup.

IIHS is a leading authority when it comes to determining the safety of modern vehicles, and the organization’s Top Safety Pick Plus award is the highest possible honor an automobile can receive from the institute.

To earn this title, a new vehicle must earn ratings of “Good” in all IIHS crash tests, including the passenger-side small overlap front test, and it must have headlights rated “Good” or “Acceptable” as standard across its line regardless of trim level.

It seems clear that Volvo has centered its branding around safety, and the latest rating from IIHS certainly proves that the automaker is nothing if not consistent and true to this mandate. Volvo’s President and CEO of U.S. Operations, Anders Gustafsson, was grateful to receive the rating.

“Regardless of body style, engine or trim, every Volvo offers innovative protection in a crash... We are proud that IIHS has recognized this by awarding a Top Safety Pick Plus to every vehicle we produce today. No other company has been awarded this honor across all carlines,” Gustafsson said.

What is perhaps most notable about Volvo’s commitment to safety, is that the automaker does not reserve its best features to only its highest trim levels, which is quite common among American manufacturers.
