Electric vehicles are becoming more and more common on American roads, but there are still obstacles that have been discouraging drivers from making the switch. One of the big concerns that many people have is access to charging their battery electric cars while on the go. Volvo has now taken a step to address this problem, becoming the first European car maker to sign an agreement with Tesla to give current and future electric Volvo car drivers access to Tesla’s vast Supercharger network across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
One of Volvo’s current goals is to become a fully electric car maker by the year 2030, so this agreement will go a long way in making their vehicles more accessible and easier to use for the average American driver. Under the agreement, all future Volvo cars from 2025 onward will be equipped with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port in the region. Fully electric Volvo drivers will now have access to 12,000 new fast-charge locations. This number is expected to grow even further as Tesla continues to expand its Supercharger network. With Volvo drivers’ existing access to tens of thousands of fast-charge points already, it’s about to become easier than ever to charge up your Volvo electric car while you’re on the go.
“As part of our journey to becoming fully electric by 2030, we want to make life with an electric car as easy as possible,” said Jim Rowan, CEO at Volvo Cars. “One major inhibitor to more people making the shift to electric driving – a key step in making transportation more sustainable – is access to easy and convenient charging infrastructure. Today, with this agreement, we’re taking a major step to remove this threshold for Volvo drivers in the United States, Canada and Mexico.”
Drivers of current and future Volvo electric vehicles will be able to find charging locations through their Volvo Cars app. The Tesla Supercharger network is expected to become available to Volvo drivers in the first half of 2024. If these drivers wish to continue charging in the Combined Charging System (CCS), they’ll be able to do so with an adapter provided by Volvo Cars.
With this new flexibility and accessibility, driving a Volvo electric vehicle is about to become easier than ever. If you’re interested in learning more about Volvo’s electrified cars, you can check out our available inventory here at Scott Volvo to see what they’re all about!
