It was a time for celebrating at Volvo’s production center outside of Charleston, South Carolina at the beginning of June. The start of the month marked the opening of a new chapter for the automaker and for drivers everywhere, as the Charleston line officially began production on Volvo’s new electric flagship SUV, the EX90.
While not Volvo’s first fully electric vehicle by a long shot, the EX90 is a groundbreaking creation nonetheless. It signifies a shift for the company as Volvo’s first car powered by core computing technology, an advancement that provides new levels of safety and security.
“The fully electric Volvo EX90 is the start of a new era for Volvo Cars – a new era for safety, sustainability and human-centric technology,” says Jim Rowan, Volvo chief executive. “The EX90 is proudly manufactured in the USA and reflects our long-term commitment to our people in South Carolina and the broader US market.”
Volvo’s ties to the United States began long before the opening of its first manufacturing plant here in the summer of 2018, but the Charleston facilities are still special regardless. Producing both the EX90 SUV and the S60 sedan, this plant has the capacity to build up to 150,000 cars each year. Located in one of the oldest and most historic cities in the country, it’s a place and an operation with great significance. The last few years have seen significant improvements to the facility, including a refreshed and expanded body shop and paint shop as well as the addition of a state-of-the-art battery pack production line. While Volvo’s roots in South Carolina are relatively young, the company’s tenure in the U.S. stretches back almost 70 years, and the new home of the EX90 is a reflection of that.
Based on Volvo’s next generation, born-electric EV technology base, the EX90 features a fully electric range of over 372 miles. It’s also been carefully crafted to be the safest Volvo car to date, utilizing a broad suite of sensors connected to next-generation passive and active safety technology and software. It’s modern yet classic Scandinavian design maximizes safety, efficiency, and style, and makes it a versatile and comfortable vehicle perfect for solo drivers or entire families.
The first customer deliveries of the new Volvo EX90 are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2024. If you’re interested in keeping up to date on all of the latest Volvo news until then, make sure you continue to read our blog here at Scott Volvo of Allentown, PA!
