Volvo is set to revolutionize its already-celebrated XC90 SUV with a cutting-edge user experience that will soon reach millions of Volvo drivers globally. Known for blending simplicity with innovation, Volvo is now introducing its new-generation infotainment system to the XC90, further enhancing its flagship SUV’s appeal.

Volvo’s goal has always been to make daily interactions with their vehicles smooth, intuitive, and enjoyable. This user-focused approach led to the creation of the advanced infotainment system seen in Volvo's electric EX90 and EX30 models. Now, the same forward-thinking design will be incorporated into the XC90, with the new experience set to arrive in 2025.

But Volvo isn’t limiting this upgrade to just the XC90. Thanks to the brand’s commitment to keeping its vehicles fresh over time, a wide-reaching over-the-air (OTA) update will deliver this enhanced user experience to approximately 2.5 million Volvo cars around the world. Any Volvo with Google built-in, dating as far back as 2020, will benefit from this upgrade at no additional cost. This marks one of the most comprehensive software updates in the automotive industry.

According to Erik Severinson, Chief Product and Strategy Officer at Volvo Cars, “Our new-generation user experience will deliver a significant improvement in customer experience and is an important step in our journey to deliver human-centric technology solutions to our customers.” Severinson highlighted that these enhancements are designed to adapt continuously to driver needs, ensuring that the user experience evolves and improves over time.

A centerpiece of the updated XC90 will be a larger, 11.2-inch free-standing central screen. The increased pixel density, up by 21%, delivers a sharper and more vibrant display. But it’s not just about looks—the new interface is designed for ease of use. The home screen now includes the most frequently used apps like maps, media, and phone controls, reducing the need to navigate through menus. For example, drivers can adjust their music without having to exit Google Maps, allowing for seamless multitasking.

Another notable feature is the contextual bar, which smartly adjusts based on the driving situation. At low speeds, it displays the outside cameras to help with parking or navigating tight spaces. This is just one way Volvo is making its technology work for the driver, reducing distractions and enhancing safety.

For plug-in hybrid owners, Volvo has simplified how you manage electric power. With the new layout, drivers can easily switch to “Pure” mode via the home screen, enabling electric-only driving with a single tap—perfect for city driving or reducing emissions in congested areas.

What truly sets Volvo’s new system apart is its scalability. Whether you’re driving a brand-new XC90 or a three-year-old XC40, this next-generation user experience adapts to different screen sizes and shapes, ensuring that all Volvo drivers benefit from this intuitive interface.

With Volvo’s innovative approach to in-car technology, the XC90 and millions of other Volvos worldwide will not only remain relevant but improve as time goes on. The road ahead just became more exciting for Volvo owners everywhere.
